#137: Baby Bonding Blocked by Postpartum Anxiety with Ligaya Lange

December 22, 2022

Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast!

If you’ve been listening to the podcast for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard me talk about my experience with postpartum depression after having my third baby.

That time was so difficult and not at all easy to cope with.

But women don’t often hear about other perinatal illnesses that are out there, like postpartum anxiety and OCD, which can be just as debilitating and frightening.

Ligaya Lange has experienced both the anxiety and OCD piece during her time postpartum and is on a mission to make others more aware.

Ligaya gave birth to her daughter during COVID following a traumatic 54 hr/C-section birth. A few weeks later, she realized she was suffering from very bad anxiety that was preventing her from bonding with her baby. And so began a long and arduous journey to find the right treatment and get well for her family.

In our conversation, we talk about the differences between standard anxiety and postpartum anxiety, how it can prevent proper bonding with baby, the signs and symptoms women can be on the lookout for, and what their first steps should be when seeking treatment.

 Some big takeaways are:

  1. Women with a history of mental illness are more prone to prenatal and perinatal mental disorders.
  2. Your primary doctor cannot help you as well as a perinatal psychiatrist can.
  3. Even if you’ve never suffered from a mental illness as a mom, you can help others by being educated and aware.
