Welcome back to the New Mom Boss Podcast!
I frequently hear stories of women going through an identity crisis upon entering motherhood. In fact, I don’t think anyone is immune to it in some shape or form.
One day we’re focusing on our careers and our hobbies, and the next we’ve changed roles completely and have to switch priorities. So of course it’s going to be tricky and in many cases, will feel very awkward as you try to find your footing.
My guest, Markella Kaplani, has also seen many moms suffer from the exact same identity crisis, coupled with the guilt and shame that tend to tag along.
Markella is a psychotherapist and a special educator, focused on helping expecting and new mothers by addressing this potential identity crisis with confidence, making sure they feel validated and empowered.
In our discussion, we talk about her personal story of a difficult postpartum, the problem of viewing motherhood as a role, matrescence and the motherly instinct, and the conflicting tension between being a successful mother and being a successful woman in today’s society.
Some big takeaways are:

Markella has been working for over 15 years as a psychotherapist as well as a special educator. Having worked with both children and parents in the counseling as well as the special education settings, she saw the multiple facets of the family system and realized that supporting the parents - and especially mothers who carry an inordinate load - was the most efficient way to help the entire family unit.
Through her own experience as a mother about three years ago, Markella was alerted to the fact that although there appear to be many books, courses and seminars in place to support pregnancy, childbirth and the baby, there was an alarming lack of attention on the psychology and emotional needs of the expecting and new mother.
As such Markella decided to focus on helping expecting and new mothers face the challenges that come along with the joys of motherhood. She does this by addressing the potential identity crisis that may arise as a woman becomes a mother while aiding her in "mourning” her old self and becoming the woman and mom she has envisioned, without guilt, without perfectionism, but with confidence.
Moms need support. They need to know that what they feel is valid and part of the process. Markella is here to empower them and to let them know that they’re not alone.
